Floral Revolution

Most of us would agree that flowers are beautiful. The very sight of a flower can lift our spirits and brighten our day. They certainly have that effect on me, and it's only in recent years that I've come to realise there is a troubling side to the flower industry and how most commercially grown flowers are produced.

There are many ethical and responsible individuals and companies within the flower industry. They care for their flowers, their land, the people who work with them and for their customers. I know this because I see it every day in my work as a farmer-florist. However, their produce accounts for only a very small percentage of the global flower trade and the disheartening reality is that most commercial flower activities damage our environment, contribute to climate change and in too many cases, exploit vulnerable workers.

A couple of years back, I decided I needed to know more about this hidden side of the industry and I set out on a journey to research and share what I was learning. The result is my e-book: Floral Revolution.

Researching material for this project was confronting. Again and again, I was shocked to discover just how much harm is caused by the way flowers are produced today.

But my research also made me hopeful, as did the many talks and interviews I've had with flower-loving people throught the project. I'm very pleased to say that I haven't met a single person who would knowingly purchase flowers that were produced unethically. In fact, in my experience people are usually horrified to hear about the negative impacts of commercial flower-farming, and this is what gives me so much hope.

I believe that all of us, as flower consumers, have an opportunity to use our purchasing power and influence to change the current exploitative model for something better. And I believe that you can help make this change happen.

Challenging the way flowers are grown, distributed and marketed around the world seems an ambitious project to take on, but please don't let that put you off!  At an individual level, none of this has to be wildly difficult. Yes, we’ll need to change some of our behaviours and yes, at times we’ll need to be courageous about asking questions and having conversations that will influence those around us. But, the good news is that these actions are not difficult to integrate into what we already do. In this e-book you'll find tips and advice to guide you along the way so that you can be part of making change happen.
